anthonyfinley
An NPI number is the National Provider Identifier called for by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). It replaces the Unique Personal Identifier Number (UPIN). The NPI is a 10-digit unique identification number used by all HIPAA-covered health providers, health plans and health care clearinghouses. This 10-digit number is intelligence free. This means that it only identifies the health provider and has no other information attached to it. There are three ways to apply for an NPI. The quickest way to apply and have an application for an NPI processed is to use the web-based system. This is done by going to the National Plan Provider and Enumeration System (NPPES) website and applying online. Once received, the NPPES reviews the information and assigns a unique NPI. Important tips for web applications: Once you have selected and entered a user ID and secret question/answer combinations the ID and question/answers combination become a permanent part of your record and can not be changed. Only use the application's navigation buttons. They are Next and Previous. Under no circumstances use your browser's navigation buttons. In the event that you have difficulty with the system and have to start over, wait twenty minutes before logging in. As you complete each page of your application print it out so that you have a record of your file.
