SuperPA_NY
Hi everyone, would like to know your opinions about an offer i have received as a new grad from an urgent care facility: -part time -$35/hr -malpractice covered (except tail) -forgot to ask about DEA requirement (dont know if i need it there; not sure if is usually covered in a part time position?) I figured to work here until i can find a full time position with benefits. Not sure if I should try to negotiate the hourly wage and for paid tail coverage. Westz33
WOW 35 an hour, run away, your worth double even as a new grad.
physio
Not sure about double, esp as a new grad but I would generally expect atleast $50/hr as an absolute bare minimum for a part-time urgent care gig with no benefits.
SuperPA_NY
thank you. i will try negotiating. Should i insist on tail coverage and DEA?
Moderator EMEDPA Posted November 8, 2012 Moderator Share Posted November 8, 2012 35 is too low. we pay our new grads 45/hr days and 50/hr nights + benefits to staff our affiliated urgent care ctr.......
Moderator ventana Posted November 9, 2012 Moderator Share Posted November 9, 2012 DO NOT TAKE $35/hour - you are just screwing yourself and every other PA and NP out there.... Your PA license and DEA # are worth $50/hour per diem bare min - or about $40/hour with GREAT bennies including a matching retirement! Gotta get it up to high $40's or low $50's/hr. Think about it - if you see one patient an hour you generate about $80 - if you see two patients an hour you make about $150 - any new grad should be able to see 2 patients an hour in a simple urgent care. don't sell yourself short. Oh yeah and not covering tail is basically saying they don't care about you at all - they only care about the company... they gotta cover tail or occurrence... SuperPA_NY
since at this time i cannot afford an AAPA membership to buy the salary report, this info helps. thx for the input. I will negotiate.
underserved
I think some RN make $35 an hour. As ventana stated, any PA taking a low ball offer will hurt the profession as a whole. Don't be selfish and accept such BS offer. It's a business so don't take the first number they throw at you. Negotiate! If you're willing to relocate, you will certainly get a better offer. Just Steve
Made 32/hr as a paramedic and had health insurance and received paid 25 hour CME/ year
RPa695
I agree- for part time you should be making more! However, every area is different. I'm a new grad making $39/hr and most of my classmates are making less, most ~32/hr. I do have pretty good benefits though.
primadonna22274
NY and PA pay very low. I will admit to you that as an experienced PA in the prison system in Pennsylvania I could only swing $31/hr. Hardly worth my time...so I much prefer the slightly further drive to rural clinic at $50/hr. still a bit of a cut from what I made in EM in SC, but grateful for the work and I enjoy it. Certainly wouldn't choose to stay here long-term with such depressed salaries!
Moderator ventana Posted November 9, 2012 Moderator Share Posted November 9, 2012 part of the reason low salaries persist is people end up taking the position so the employer "waits it out" to get a PA to take it Seriously NY - Albany Area - is not that bad but you have to look around.... underserved
I agree Jeff. I got offered a urgent care gig. $50 an hr, $12 wkend diff, $15 holiday diff, cme, health insurance and malpractice. If you get any less blame yourself. Btw I'm a new grad.
fireguy
FYI, when you leave this position, your tail coverage could cost you up to 3-4 x the annual insurance premium. That could be a hefty amount of $$ you hafa pay out of pocket. (for me, it would be $10,000)
JFarnsworth
As a new grad several years ago I started at $40 an hour. I had full benes, PTO, CMEs, etc. Don't sell yourself short.
