lancer_dancer01
Hey all, So I have been a Pulm/Sleep PA since I graduated 5 years ago (all outpatient/clinic). I am really wanting to get into critical care (I was a RT prior to PA school) and was thinking about looking at a residency as an option to get me there. My first concern is that I have been out of school too long to get into a residency. Anyone have any experience or knowledge of applicants a few years out of graduation getting a residency spot? Moderator EMEDPA Posted July 16, 2020 Moderator Share Posted July 16, 2020 Sounds like you would be a great residency applicant. I don't think residencies discriminate against those who are not new grads.

I was 3 years out. No problem
HMtoPA
Don't worry about it. I just started an EM fellowship a little over 6 years after graduation. I think I'm getting much more out of it now than I would've as a new grad. 1

I think mastering general medicine helped me focus on the advanced aspects of my specialty.
dphy83
I am looking at going back for another residency. Based on conversations that I have had with a couple residency directors that I've spoken with, I think there is a lot of interest in candidates with experience. And I agree with the above statement that you will likely get much more out of a residency with experience. You have a lot of fundamentals down and can use the residency to really expand on those instead if trying to do both at the same time.
JD2012
I've interviewed for a handful of residencies and every one of them had a working PA in a specialty trying to make the transition to a new one. I don't think it is a disadvantage at all. Edited July 21, 2020 by JD2012

He did general surgery, figured out he liked CT surgery, so did a dedicated year of CT surgery residency.

How long would it have taken him to get to that level without doing this residency? Thanks.

Thanks. it was more money , certainly, but it was also the ability to know that he would get every single job he ever applied for in any location in CT surgery for the rest of his career. Last I knew, He was in Beverly hills working at Cedars-sinal, taking care of movie stars for an obscene amount of money that he never would have gotten without his residency experience.

This is exactly my reason. It is getting to a point where it is hard to break into certain areas without specific experience in that field or a residency.
