MediMike
Hey all! Hoping not to get my rear chewed for not posting in the roll call section first, but not being in the military yet dissuaded me from putting my name up there. Currently been an EMT/Paramedic for around 8 years now, am finishing up my B.S. in Paramedicine prior to applying to PA school. From what I've read on here the military utilizes PA's in some pretty great roles and I am looking to serve. Grew up in an Army family, most of my cohorts have been in, and I feel like its my time to do my part with some great men and women. Anyways, I sent out a couple emails and phone calls to various Army recruiters, and was informed by them that the HPSP is NOT available for a Masters PA program, anyone else run into this or have any information? I'm in the process of contacting the Naval guys as we speak...
ToppDog
Pardon my ignorance, but what is HPSP?
MediMike
Health Professions Scholarship Program. Great program set in place to assist medical professionals obtain their degrees and follow up with service.
ToppDog
Thanks! Not sure about your question, but someone will be along soon. If you can't get that scholarship up front, did the recruiters say what kind of loan repayment options they offer new PA grads for joining up? MediMike
Unfortunately no, the email reply I received was from a contractor and wasn't helpful at all besides "Get your degree then go talk to your local recruiter", and the local recruiter I called seemed unable to understand my question, so it was left at "We've got nothing for you, the website hasn't been updated in a long time". BUT...If the research I've done has proven true, there is a loan repayment program available as well. I appreciate the replies, feeling a little lonely on here haha
MainePA
If you go IPAP you'll pick up your Master's degree and the Army will foot the bill. Make sure you speak to a medical recruiter--not every state has one but there is at least one in each region and these folks can fill you in. Have the local recruiter follow chain of command to find a healthcare recruiter if they don't know who it is.
MediMike
I'm trying to avoid enlisting and rather come in as a commissioned officer utilizing the HPSP, otherwise IPAP would work. Heard its extremely competitive though due to it being such a great program. Working on finding a specific healthcare recruiter here in WA, I had a pretty frustrating time communicating with the local recruiter. Thanks again guys(gals). pH_7.40
As far as I'm aware you have to be on the military and at least an E5 before you can even apply to the program. I'm across the street from them and they are some extremely high quality individuals.
SCHMITTIE120
Only navy and air force offer hpsp. You can get loan repayment though around 80,000 or more if I am not mistaken.
MediMike
Hah! Thank you. I found a couple conflicting websites, and finally made contact with a recruiter able to answer it for me. Apparently there ARE some outdated sites floating around. I appreciate everyone's help once again.
belmonte_ro
I am trying to apply for the HPSP too, but I'm having trouble getting in contact with recruiters and don't know where to start. I do know that the Army doesn't offer HPSP for PA programs. So I'm looking into the AF and Navy.
Friction
Navy obviously ;) I do have a slight bias however, being that I'm a Corpsman... Check out this facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/groups/273000438378/
karebear12892
I know this forum is a bit out of date - but does anyone know if Army is currently allowing physician assistant students to apply for HPSP?
Maverick87
I know this forum is a bit out of date - but does anyone know if Army is currently allowing physician assistant students to apply for HPSP? I'm pretty sure the Army doesn't offer the HPSP for PAs anymore (I don't think any branch does). Have you looked into the public health service? nminto91w
Maverick87 is correct. Army does not offer that. However, if you are interested after becoming a PA-C, you can join the army as part of loan-repayment process. You can check out following site: http://www.usarec.army.mil/armypa/. I was in the army as a medic for 11 years. Good luck!
mw1n5d4
If you don't mind joining the Navy, they have HPSP and HSCP programs. Both are great in their own way. Availability of both programs depends on the needs of the Navy. Talk to Medical Officer Recruiters. Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk

karebear12892
You're correct. Actually, they just announced a couple of weeks ago that the Navy would be offering 2 HPSP scholarships in addition to 17 HSCP scholarships.
