discogenic
Does anyone know if IR tends to hire new grads? It's obviously a procedure-heavy specialty, so is experience a must? And if so, what kind of experience? IR doesn't seem like a specialty that would necessarily benefit from a year or two in primary care.
Moderator EMEDPA Posted November 28, 2013 Moderator Share Posted November 28, 2013 most places train folks on the job for IR. if that is your dream job by all means do it but be aware that you need to maintain your primary care knowledge base for future testing. all the folks I know who went into IR either did it right out of school and intend to do it forever or did it much later in the careers. Moderator True Anomaly Posted November 29, 2013 Moderator Share Posted November 29, 2013 We had one of our PA's in our group go over to IR about a year ago- he was hired for ER straight out of school, and did that for about a year before going to IR. He seems to be doing okay. I'm not sure if they really cared if he had the year of ER experience or not, but no doubt it helped.
Moderator ventana Posted November 29, 2013 Moderator Share Posted November 29, 2013 IR can be fun, but it is no way anything to do with dx thought or treatment - 100% procedural based, you get paid to do things, it is very fun, and rewarding, but it is not a broad based field. I would be very hesitant to come out of school and go into IR - you will forget the medicine and the possibility that your first job will be your forever job is very small. Get a good medicine or surgical job with a good mentor as the first job
KMD16
Agreed. Specializing as a PA, particularly, post PA sch, highly discourage.
